Maria's colostomy was a success!
Maria arrived at Barnes Hospital this morning at 6:30 am and entered surgery at 8:30 am, with Dr. James Fleshman, Jr. performing a laparoscopic colostomy.  (Incidentally, Dr. Fleshman is the inventor of this less-invasive type of colostomy utilizing a laparoscope as opposed to conventional incisions.)  Dr. Fleshman declared that the surgery went very well and Maria should be on schedule to begin her radiation/chemotherapy treatments the week of October 4th (see "Treatments & Surgery Schedule" link.)

Maria will remain in Barnes Hospital for the next several days:

Maria has been touched and uplifted by the overwhelming volume of positive,  inspirational, and thoughtful messages left for her on this web-site. She has expressed, however, that she would prefer that her hospital visitors be limited to immediate family members.

Maria was able to rest fairly comfortably overnight (when they were not waking her to draw blood, check her vital signs, etc...)  Her voice sounds strong this morning and she was told that her system seems to be responding well to the procedure yesterday.  She is amazing!

Maria looks incredible and her surgeon declared that she's "doing great!"  She will likely be released from the hospital this weekend!

MARIA IS HOME!!!!!!   After removing her IV and other tubes yesterday afternoon, Dr. Fleshman determined that Maria's recovery from the colostomy was rapid enough that he released her last night.

We are thrilled that she already reached one milestone in her recovery and we are encouraged that she is ahead of schedule (she was released from the hospital in 2 1/2 days after originally being told she should plan to be in the hospital 3-5 days following her colostomy.)  We know that the rest of her recovery will go just as well!
